What are the health benefits of a himalayan salt lamp or salt caves?
To begin with, they are one of the best ways I know of to relax and combat the winter blues is to visit a salt room.
What is a salt room?
While relatively new in the United States, salt caves have been used for their health benefits for hundreds of years. Believe it or not, in Hungary salt caves are recommended by doctors and it’s covered by health insurance!
I absolutely love my local salt room. It has seven tons of kosher Dead Sea salt that covers the walls and floors of the room. You can literally taste the salt in your mouth when you walk in. The salt is full of minerals such as calcium, iron, and magnesium. Personally, I like to go in in my bare feet. It feels like walking on the beach. I like to go to the “quiet sessions” where the lights are turned off, stars shine on the ceiling and the sound of the ocean is plays quietly in the background.
And, can I just say it is so affordable? Groupon offers great deals in my area. I can buy three 45 minute sessions for only $41 or one session for $16.
How do salt caves help the winter blues?
Salt generates negative ions. I’ll spare you all the complicated science, but basically negative ions neutralize free radicals. This helps improve your mood, creating a feeling of relaxation. Do you ever feel more relaxed and peaceful when you’re at the ocean? Or notice how things feel “lighter” after a thunderstorm? This is because they also release negative ions. That’s why spending time in a salt room produces a similar feeling and why winter is the perfect time to visit one.
But salt caves aren’t just for winter. There’s also many other health benefits than just helping with the blues.
Salt caves can also help with:
- sinus issues
These are more great reasons to visit a salt cave! Whenever I leave the salt room I can actually breathe out of my nose and my sinuses are clear as a bell!
No salt rooms in your area?
Why not try a Himalayan salt lamp for your home? (I actually have four in my home, a nine pound one being the biggest!) Salt lamps are basically a beautiful chunk of salt, hollowed out in the middle, with a light bulb in it.
What are the health benefits of a himalayan salt lamp?
Himalayan salt lamps have a beautiful orange or pink color and when turned on they produce a gorgeous orange glow. Just like salt rooms, the lamps also release negative ions and provide the same health benefits of a salt cave. They add hygge and coziness to your home. (Hygge is a Danish word that means “the art of cozy living.” They developed this concept to help them through the dark days of winter.) Check out these other posts if you’d like to learn more about hygge: Learn How to Practice The Art of Cozy Living and 10 Ideas to Help You Practice The Art of Cozy Living. Shops also sell cute salt lamps for children in animal shapes like cats, turtles, and frogs.
Salt lamps don’t emit blue light. Most artificial lights contain some degree of blue light which reduces melatonin and interferes with sleep. (Which is why you should avoid things such as computers before bed, or install a free program such as Iflux which dims the blue light of the computer as the sun sets.) Positive ions can reduce blood and oxygen to the brain which also results in poor sleep.
Electromagnetic radiation is released from electronics like televisions, computers, cell phones. Too much exposure to electromagnetic radiation can increase stress levels, decrease your immune response, and release positive ions. Keeping a salt lamp on your desk near your computer is an excellent way to help reduce stress and create a calming environment at work.
Color therapy also plays into the effects of salt lamps. Their orangish pinkish light creates a cozy and relaxing atmosphere. The first thing I do when I get home is turn on my salt lamps.
How do you pick out a salt lamp?
Here are a few guidelines, but honestly I’m a firm believer in listening to your intuition when picking on gems or crystals.
The rule of thumb is that 1 pound of himalayan salt cleans a 4’x4′ area. For larger spaces you might want to consider a lamp that is between 12-15 pounds. Higher quality salt lamps are more pink and orange. Light pink, or signs of black, mean that they are lower in quality. Also remember that you need to use a heat producing light bulb like this for salt lamps. (Most salt lamps should already come with a light bulb.) When replacing the light bulb be sure you use the right kind! The directions will come with the lamp. (I once used the wrong wattage and almost started a fire. Thankfully we smelled something burning and quickly located the source.)
So, if you suffer from any of the following:
- sinus issues
then I encourage you to try a visit to a salt room or invest in a few salt lamps today!
