Be prepared with my favorite essential oil kit.

There’s a lot of buzz out there right now about essential oils. Have you thought about incorporating them into your daily life but aren’t sure where to start? Using essential oils does not need to require a big investment of time or money.

Today I’m going to share 6 of my favorite essential oils for everyday use. What I love most about these oils is that they are affordable and safe. They are also extremely versatile, allowing you to get the most bang for your buck!

Lavender

One of my all time favorite essentials oils. Lavender can be applied undiluted to the skin. It is most well-known for its relaxing properties. Inhale lavender essential oil before bed time to ease insomnia. A few drops could  be added to a spray bottle of water and used as a mist on bed linens, pajamas, and even your child. I used a “nursery mist” with my daughter for several years, starting when she was just a newborn. I recently started using an aromatherapy spray again as part of our bedtime routine. It makes such a calming night time ritual. Or, add to lotion for a calming massage before bed. In addition to being relaxing, lavender can also help ease discomfort from insect bites, rashes, and burns when applied directly to the skin.

Tea Tree

Tea tree is another oil that can be used directly on the skin and does not have to be diluted. Its antiseptic qualities make it perfect for treating scrapes and cuts. It is also useful for adding to homemade cleaners. Tea tree also has anti-fungal properties and can assist in healing athlete’s foot. While I have not personally tried this, it can be applied directly in the mouth for toothaches. (However, for little babies I do NOT recommend this. Use catnip tea instead, which is much more mild. I used to soak little baby wash cloths in catnip tea and then freeze them. My daughter liked to suck on these when she was teething.)

Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary

Another one of my favorite herbs and essential oils! Rosemary can be inhaled for rejuvenation when you are tired. It is one of my first remedies I turn to when trying to treat a headache. A drop or two in a cup of water, sipped slowly, while massaging your temples often provides relief. Rosemary can be used to make a nice massage oil for sore muscles and sprains or could be added directly to bath water. Apply neat (directly) to bee stings.

Orange

Orange essential oil is fabulous for uplifting spirits. It is also a calming scent for children. Orange essential oil is my go to for scenting homemade cleaning products. When my daughter was younger I used it to freshen diaper pails and diaper bags.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus essential oil can be inhaled to help relieve stuffy sinuses and chest congestion. It is wonderful to use in a diffuser (or vaporizer if you have the kind that has a spot for diffuser pads) for colds, the flu, and respiratory illnesses. It makes a nice compress for the chest when combined with rosemary. Check out this post on how to make your own aromatherapy tissues.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint

Inhale peppermint to ease symptoms of morning sickness. Children can also inhale it for an upset tummy or dilute in a carrier oil and rub on the stomach.

One word of caution, if you are going to ingest essential oils or use them on your children, it is extremely important to get them from a quality source. There are quite a few big brand names out there right now, but when researching them I found conflicting reports indicating that tests by independent third parties detected chemicals in them. I prefer to go with a smaller, independently owned business.

I use Enchanted Essences for all of my essential oil needs. All of Lisa’s oils are organic and 100% free of any chemicals. Enchanted Essences offers all six of these essential oils in one convenient travel size pouch. There is a small instruction card included in the oil kit that shows how to use each oil for these common problems. The size of the pouch is perfect for slipping in your purse or diaper bag. (It is also great for entertaining wiggly toddlers when you are dining out! I use this trick frequently.)

essential_6_packIf you’d like to personalize your essential oil pouch like I did below, Artscow makes the perfect size bag which you can customize with a photo of your choice.
