Do you ever wish you could get picked to go on one of those makeover shows? Do you want to feel more comfortable in your own skin? Can’t remember the last time you actually enjoyed shopping for clothes? Are you in a yoga pants rut? Then you need to know about my newest, can’t-believe-I-ever-lived-without-it, I’ve-fallen-in-love-discovery, called a capsule wardrobe.

What is a capsule wardrobe you might be wondering? No, it isn’t a plan for what to pack on vacation to expand your number of outfit choices. (That’s what I thought for years!) But first, I need to re-wind just a little.
Today I want to talk about something deeply personal. I’m a little nervous so share so much of myself with you. This post may seem odd and off topic compared to my normal self care posts, but really in the end it is about self care, and more importantly, self love.
All of my life I’ve struggled with the way I look. I honestly can’t shake the feeling that I’m ugly. I’m talking to the point where I avoid mirrors and sometimes social events. I know I sound so shallow but I’ve never been confident about my appearance. For years I walked around, hunched over, just hoping no one would look at me. I would imagine myself invisible. And pictures? No way. Couple all of this old baggage with having a baby and getting used to a new body and I was a hot mess. It sounds ridiculous, I know. But it’s true.
If any of you can relate to what I’m saying, I want to offer you hope. I used to dread shopping for clothes. I hated all of the mirrors and bright lights, the dressing rooms, all of the choices, colors, and styles. Where to even start??? Usually I’d just end up overwhelmed, unable to find anything that felt right or looked good together and I would leave in tears without buying anything. Plus, I felt like I didn’t deserve to spend money on myself. I honestly went years without new clothes. (I also had an adorable little daughter to shop for so that made it easy for me to justify ignoring myself.)
What changed? I discovered Alison Lumbatis, from Get Your Pretty On, through one of the Ultimate Homemaking bundles. Her wardrobe capsules, Facebook group, and emails have changed my life. (And I’m not over exaggerating!)
Do you want to have a closet full of clothes that you love? An affordable way to build your wardrobe (and save time doing it)? Do you want to feel confident and put together when you get dressed everyday? Then I urge you to try one of Alison’s capsule wardrobes or style challenges. Her new Winter style challenge is open. (Bonuses include: Winter 2017 Capsule Wardrobe, Color Palette Resource, Daily Outfit Calendar and Holiday Glam Guide.)
I know there are lots of other fashion bloggers out there, but here’s why I love Alison and her capsule wardrobes:
First of all, she offers a Closet Staples capsule wardrobe which covers the basics that you need to create a foundation for your wardrobe.
She also has a Stay at Home Mom wardrobe capsule. I actually love this one because I work in an office where I have to dress business casual. Most of the outfits in this collection can easily be changed to work outfits by switching the jeans to pants.
Once I had these two capsules in place, I have been enjoying her seasonal style challenges. She basically incorporates pieces from the closet staples wardrobe into new outfits where you only need to add a few new seasonal pieces. It’s truly brilliant.
Do you ever struggle with finding outfits that are age appropriate?
As I’ve reached forty, everything looks too young for me or like I’m a grandmother. I love Alison’s taste. It’s timeless and age appropriate. It’s like having your own personal stylist, seriously. With a daily outfit calendar, Style Challenges takes the guesswork out of getting dressed in the morning. You’ll know exactly what to wear and feel confident walking out the door. You’ll also actually spend less on clothes after participating in a few Style Challenge seasons. They are color coordinated so that even if you only have a select number of pieces of clothing, you have a large amount of different outfits you can wear because everything goes together. By building basics over time you’ll just need to add a few trend pieces each season.
Style Challenges are all about less stuff, more style.
Alison offers direct links to recommended pieces, from lower priced stores like Target to higher end shops like Nordstrom’s. And, she links to all sizes, including plus sizes. You don’t need to have a body like Barbie to use her capsules and challenges.
Finally, I’m learning to I feel more comfortable in my own skin. I stand up straight.
I look forward to getting dressed each day. Self esteem comes from within, I realize that, but I’ll take a little boost wherever I can get it. After so many years being mom, it’s nice to have a little hobby I enjoy and that makes me feel little perkier each day.
So, if you feel like your in a clothing rut, wearing yoga pants and your husbands T-shirts everyday, hate shopping, wish you had a personal stylist, or neglected yourself for way too long, I can’t recommend one of Get Your Pretty On’s challenges or Capsule Wardrobes enough.
Even signing up for her email list is such a valuable resource if you aren’t looking to buy anything right now. She keeps you up to date on current hair trends, nail polish colors and more. Plus, you’ll get a FREE shopping list and four outfit ideas from the exclusive Closet Staples Casual Capsule Wardrobe Builder.
Alison gave me the tools I needed in this season of motherhood to practice a little self love and help build my confidence. I no longer stress when it comes to shopping for clothes and I finally feel like I deserve to buy pretty things for myself. I don’t wander aimlessly in stores and then leave feeling defeated, without buying anything. Normally I wouldn’t write about fashion, but because of how much this has changed both my inner and my outer self, I just had to share. You’ll never have to worry about what to wear again! (Alison’s capsule wardrobes make a great gift too.)
